Every town celebrates its saint, and Christmas runs from November to January. This is the Puerto Rican year, month by month.
It's the eve of the feast of Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of the capital and of the whole island. When Columbus arrived in 1493 he named the island San Juan Bautista, and the port was called Puerto Rico. Over the years, the names swapped.
The celebration came from Spain, where the summer solstice has been marked with fire and water for centuries. Here, the water stuck.
Cómo se haceHow it's done
Head to the beach with family and friends. In San Juan, El Escambrón, Ocean Park and Isla Verde fill up; every coastal town has its own spot.
- Música, comida y fogatas hasta la medianoche.Music, food and bonfires until midnight.
At midnight, walk into the sea backward and fall back into the water: three times is the usual, though some people do seven or twelve.
It washes away bad luck and brings good luck for the year ahead, and some say it guards against the evil eye too.
